Flavors of the East...
an obligatory stop into the Pearl River trading company, where we spotted this wonderful lunchbox, as well as a tiny carton of bacon-flavored toothpicks.

For dinner, we ducked on a whim into an open-air Indonesian restaurant where I had a delicious nasei-something-or-other that featured a pickled salad, anchovies sauteed in a delicate sauce, and a chicken curry with fragrant coconut rice. The unusual combination of flavors was exciting in concert. Q, exhausted by a long day of social obligations, slept through the entire meal.
The real star of the night was this melt-in-the-mouth curried chicken appetizer wrapped like a gift in banana leaves. We spotted it on a neighboring table and just pointed to it, so unfortunately we have no idea what it was called. Can anyone help? It was superb. My husband had been trying to duplicate it in the kitchen, but it would help if we could look up the name of the dish.
Still out on the walk home. We call this "total consciousness failure".
Back in the hotel and hiding under the eiderdown with daddy. Happy girl!

I how I love NY! These pictures make me want to board a plane. Where do you stay while in NY???
Lisa, we stayed just off Wall Street and Maiden Lane for the first few days (an area I don't know well) and in midtown for the last couple of days. These early shots are all from the financial district and surrounds...though I found the Wall Street area confusing and hard to navigate, it was absolutely wonderful being within easy walking distance of Chinatown and Little Italy, and right next to the walking path over the Brooklyn Bridge. Loved it!

I'm guessing the chicken was some sort of croquette - try Ayam Kroket Kari. If it had coconut milk it might have been opor ayam. Or maybe ayam pepes? Lemon grass? Pepes is Balinese and usually made with ikan (fish) but can be made with chicken. It comes in a banana leaf like that.
So, yeah, probably not as helpful as I might be. But it looks yummy.
Oh, Elaine! Thank you! That's very helpful. I think with those clues we should be able to track it down (my husband's a former chef so he's good at narrowing down the odds based on ingredients). He tried three different curry-based formulas the other night, one of them with lemon grass curry and the other two with various balances of curry spices. We will look up the dishes you've mentioned and I bet he can figure out which is closest. He has a wonderful palate. Thank you!!
