Memorial Day

This memorial day morning has brought torrential rains to our fair city, and QQ and I are curled up with a fuzzy blanket waiting for our friends Lara and Tegan to come down from the mountains. It will be interesting to see what we can cook up to do indoors on a day like today...

In fact, this has been the wettest spring (between early snowstorms and the wild, electric deluges of rain we've been having for the past week or two) that I've seen in years. The sunny side of that picture is that I don't have to water, and the gardens are thrilled!

In today's news, QQ woke up and scribbled something on her magnetic drawing tablet. I thought she was trying for a circle (we've been working on that lately), so I said "Oh, good try, Q! That's almost a circle!" But she shook her head and signed "fish" and pointed at the tablet. My daughter drew me a fish this morning!! I have never seen her attempt to draw something besides just scribbling before.

Next, she signed "writing" and held the tablet out to me. So I wrote "mama" in capital letters. I pointed to it and said "What does that say?" She pointed to the word and said "mama!"...and then she kissed it. How sweet is that?

P.S. - Oh, and another new illustration of mine is exclusively on the Pioneer Woman's site today.

pettiskirts and basketball hoops 2: outdoors

Yup, I was so enjoying watching her play hoops in that extravagant skirt that I even let her go outside in it. Better light for photography, was my selfish reasoning.
This is her sign for "shoot the frickin' ball, already!"
"Fine. I'll shoot it myself. " She's not bad, right? I think she shows unusual aptitude at ball sports. And since she's as tall as your average two-something at just barely 20 mos, maybe she's on the right track!
We're still working on those spacial relations. "Too big? Bah. I bet I can make it fit."
I mean, yes - it's contrived. She would not have chosen to wear this skirt while shooting hoops. She probably would have picked out a pair of comfortable PJ bottoms and a Johnny Cash T. But, really, these photos are priceless, no? As long as I have the opportunity to manipulate her wardrobe for my own amusement, I intend to take advantage.

pettiskirts and basketball hoops

This was just such a strange sight that I could help but snap a gazillion photos. And Chrissie sent this pettiskirt to QQ, and she still hasn't grown into it....her teeny-tiny waist is much too small, and it slides down over the bulk of her diaper like gangsta pants, which is hilarious in and of itself. I put it on while changing her diaper from the crib, just as a joke, and she immediately escaped my grasp and shot off to the livingroom for her morning round of basketball practice.
She had no trouble dribbling in the skirt. The only hard part was when one of her balls would get stuck underneath the wide ruffles, and she had to bend over and fish under her skirts for it. This was a real slapstick routine. Really, I should have taken a video.
She prefers to play with at least four balls of varying sizes simultaneously. If a larger one doesn't fit through her toddler-sized hoop, she just turns it over and uses the base to shoot through.
Here she is dropping her skirts after releasing a ball that was trapped beneath them.
And she's off!
"Too big" is a concept that she's still testing out.
Meanwhile, outside...
...dewdrops in the garden that were too beautiful not to photograph. These are baby brussel sprout plants, I think.

QQ of Troy

I don't know what to think of our daughter's future...I really don't. Rather, it's not so much that I fear for her, but that I fear for the men who will inevitably fall under her spell, only to find themselves turned into trolls and enslaved in her enchanted garden where they will be forced to bring her tea cakes and peel blueberries for her all day.

Here's the thing: They're already dropping like flies.

Recently, I've noticed gradeschool-age boys gaping dumbstruck as she strolls by. It's like their eyes are drawn irresistibly to that little rosebud of a face. The other day, we were going for a run downtown, and we passed a boy of about nine or ten shadow-sword-fighting with a pole on the side of the street. As we passed, he dropped his "sword" and gazed at QQ with that particular, loopy look people get when they see her for the first time. When he could finally tear his eyes away, he looked up at me and said, in a deadly-serious voice, "She's cute."

The very next day, we were at the mall running some errands, and happened to pass by the pit-of-germs that passes for a play area for toddlers. (As you can tell, I'm not a big fan of those crowded mall play areas, so we tend to avoid them like the plague). The older brother of one of the toddlers was sitting on the wall of the play area, looking bored and kicking his feet in the air while his sister clambered around on the plastic waffles. And let me tell you, this kid was a looker - he was gonna grow up to be a hottie, for sure. Dark curls, syrupy skin, long black lashes. When he saw QQ, his face did that same loopy thing that they all do. And....here's what frightens me more - I saw QQ notice his glance and instantly turn on the charm. She batted her eyes and dimpled and and smiled and waved her rubbery little hand, and the kid just visibly melted. You could feel it happen.
"She's cute!" he told me.
"Yeah," I said. "We get that a lot"

Yesterday afternoon, on our way back from the art museum, we passed a gaggle of hardcore teenagers, pierced, tattood, spiked and clad in ragged clothing and combat boots. Next thing I know, QQ is dimpling and reaching out to high-five a young man with anarchy symbols tattood on his shaved head, and a spike through each side of his mouth, chin, and both eyebrows. He grinned back at her, showing still more internal piercings. QQ just waved and cood and batted her eyes at him.

Of course, it's all very innocent. It's even funny to watch at this stage. But these boys, they don't know what they're gonna be up against. Because, let me tell you, QQ knows her arsenal of weapons well and uses them with deadly accuracy in order to get what she wants. She will take your cheeks between her tiny hands and press her little peach-smelling mouth against yours, all just to get you to reach her something off of a high shelf. In the middle of a busy road, she will say "Ma-ma?" in her most lilting and syrupy voice, just to watch your head whip around to see what she might need back there in her carseat. Then she will laugh out loud in amusement at how easily she was able to make you jump to attention. Trying to talk on the phone when she wants the attention for herself? She will dimple and coo and rub eskimo kisses onto your nose, and giggle sweet nothings into your ear, and tickle your chin, until you've completely forgotten any sort of conversation you were attempting to carrying on, and the person on the other end of the line is thoroughly exasperated with your lack of attention.
That's our Q. She has the power. She knows it. She uses it.
It's like she has fairy dust that she sprinkles in the eyes of all of those around her, leaving a trail of staggering, cross-eyed acolytes in her wake, all ready to catch her ball for her, pick up the toys that she drops in her wake, bring her bits of chocolate and packets of sugar - anything in order to bask again in the sweet sorcery of that enchanted smile.

Yup, I feel for those boys. I really do.

My favorites

This is my favorite series of photos....well, so far!
It just so perfectly describes the season, doesn't it?
This was another afternoon of lawn picnics followed by planting of all the loot we brought back from Echter's.

Eating a sandwich. She can feed herself just fine, but she still enjoys being fed, and I have to tell you...there's nothing cuter than that little baby-bird mouth opening wide for a bite, and those little lips closing around your fingertips. Neither of us can resist feeding her when she's in the mood to be served!

Watching daddy sort plants.
THat's bok choy at the bottom....we're kind of excited about that!

Sniffing a tray of lettuce as if it were a posey of flowers. Well, she hasn't quite understood the distinction yet!

yellow rose

I can't stop myself. It's the monkey on my back. I was complaining to M. tonight about how impossibly many photos I have to go through and process in order to catch up. He councilled me to upload them all onto my external hard drive, forget about them, and start over tomorrow.
"I can't!" I wailed. "They're too good! I have to post them!"
He just looked at me and shook his head.
The problem is that I'm so goofily in love with our life right now that I just have to document almost every hour of every day. Plus, QQ matures and grows and changed by the day lately, and each day she's likely to be a different person. How can I not document all that?
And then there's her joy. Her sheer, constant, bubbling joy in life which...I mean, how can I not record that for posterity??
On this afternoon, we took the stroller downtown, and I released her from her straps to run around the dog park by the Confluence for a half hour or so. As you can see, her coordination has improved massively lately. She's quite the runner these days, and does it every chance she gets. The yellow roses were a happy accident...I spotted them in someone's backyard, crawling forgotten along the fence line, as we came down the hill to the park. They happened to go with Q's dress.
This hill is very, very steep - difficult even for an adult to negotiate in sandals. QQ had never tackled a hill anywhere near steep before, but she chugged determinedly up it as soon as I released her from the stroller, and then turned on her heel and came barreling back down, heedless of peril. I snapped photos until I had to drop the camera and catch her before she diggered on her forehead.
Kayaks at a local shop near the confluence. QQ found these exciting as well, naturally.

This is really more for me....

...but I feel the need to keep track of QQ's signs at this stage, so I'm going to try to list them here, for the sake of posterity:

- daddy
- more
- please
- thank you
- play
- ball
- bicycle
- help
- eat
- drink
- milk
- octopus
- flower
- bear
- duck
- baby
- sleep
- all done
- cookie
- cheese
- peas
- book
- bird
- apple
- icecream
- fish
- I love you

hmmmmmmm...that's all I can think of right now. I'm probably forgetting some.
BTW, I love this site for quickly looking up a sign on the fly:
